In Zagreb, on 09.07.2013, a woman and her partner were attacked by two men. The partner, who is Roma, was visibly injured in the attack. Regarding his complaint of assault, the case was prosecuted. The woman, in this case the plaintiff, was called a “slut” by the attackers because she was in a partnership with a Rom. During the attack on her partner, she was also injured. When she wanted to file a complaint, the Croatian authorities rejected it because she was not a Romni and therefore could not be the victim of a racist attack. You can find the full facts here. The subsequent judgment confirms that associated discrimination can also be claimed in hate crime cases.
