For its legal support of discrimination victims, BUG was awarded the ‘Band für Mut und Verständigung’ (Ribbon for Courage and Understanding) on 7 June 2013. The Bündnis der Vernunft gegen Gewalt und Ausländerfeindlichkeit (Alliance of Reason against Violence and Xenophobia) has been awarding the prize every year since 1994 to ‘citizens who demonstrate bravery and civic courage in the face of racist violence, and dedicate themselves to long-term, voluntary, committed work to promote intercultural understanding in Berlin and Brandenburg’. This year’s event was sponsored by the German president, Joachim Gauck. In addition to BUG, the association „Belziger Forum e. V“ and  SV Rot-Weiß Viktoria Mitte 08 e. V. were honoured at the ceremony.
