Equality duties of state institutions have a legal basis. However, there are differences between the respective legal bases in Northern Ireland and Great Britain. This is due to the Good Friday Agreement of 1998 which re-established decentralisation in Northern Ireland, which lead to the new founding of some Northern Irish constitutional bodies that were assigned specific powers. WhileNorthern Ireland has various legal bases for equality duties, Great Britain and the Republic of Ireland have a single law streamlining such duties.
