In addition to employment legislation, which also applies to educational institutions (The Equality Clause, Age Discrimination Act of 1967, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990), there are also specific laws concerning education. Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits discrimination based on race, color and national origin in programs and activities receiving federal funding. Furthermore, the Office of Civil Rights (OCR) enforces the following anti-discrimination laws: Title IX of the Educational Amendments of 1972 prohibits discrimination based on sex in any federally funded education program or activity. The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), signed into law in 2015, updated the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. The purpose of ESSA was to make sure that public schools provide a quality education for all kids. Based on ESSA, the States have a greater say in how schools account for student achievement.

These examples have played a part in the development of law.
