Stigmatization ofobese people in the healthcare system is widespread. The most common prejudices are that these people are lazy, unwilling and unhealthy. The only reason that they cannot lose weight is because of their lack of discipline and self-control. This stigma also affects the interaction of doctors with their patients. Obese patients receive on average less treatment than patients with normal weight. Out of shame, anxiety for discrimination and stigma, obese patients avoid doctor visits. This is especially dangerous if diseases are not treated in a timely manner.
